Scientists at the Nottingham Trent University in the UK have recently finished work on a computer program that, they say, can analyze and recognize the vocal signatures of grey wolves.

What they mean to say is that, with the help of this program, wildlife researchers and rangers will be able to determine which wolves are howling, and monitor both packs and lone wolves living in the wild.

“Wolves howl a lot in the wild. Now we can be sure exactly which wolf it is that's howling,” PhD student Holly Root-Gutteridge argues. Sources say that this computer program analyzes not just the frequency of a wolf's howl, but also its volume. This is what makes it this efficient.

The researchers who worked on this project expect that their program could one day be used to monitor coyote and even wild dog populations.
