The following tutorial will teach Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin) users how to upgrade their operating system to the brand-new Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal) release.

Ubuntu 12.10, also known as the Quantal Quetzal, arrived on October 18th, 2012 and is the 17th release of the Ubuntu operating system. To see what features it brings, check out our in-depth article first.

Also, if you want to install the Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal) operating system on an empty hard drive, check out our in-depth tutorial about how to install Ubuntu 12.10.

This tutorial is addressed to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS users who just want to upgrade their current installation to Ubuntu 12.10 and don't know how.

Let's begin, shall we?

Click the system indicator icon (is the last one on the panel, the one that looks like a gear) and click the "Software Up to Date" entry in the menu to open the Update Manager tool.

Now click on the “Settings” button, wait for the Software Sources window to appear, go to the “Updates” tab and select the “For any new version” entry from the drop down list of the “Notify me of a new Ubuntu version” option.

Now close the Software Source dialog, and click the “Check” button on the Update Manager tool. Wait a few seconds for the information to be reloaded and the new version of Ubuntu will appear on the upper part of the window. Click the “Upgrade” button to proceed.

Wait for the upgrade tool to gather some information about your system. At this point, we will be notified if you’re computer is compatible with Ubuntu 12.10 or not. If you get a message like the one below, do NOT upgrade!

In a couple of minutes you will be asked if you really want to start the upgrade process, so please click the “Start Upgrade” button if you’re ready.

Now the upgrade process will begin and it will take some time, depending on your Internet connection and computer’s specs. So make sure you get a coffee or something and wait until it’s done...

At some point you will be asked if you want to remove or keep some obsolete packages. Take a look at them, and choose “Keep” or “Remove.” But keep in mind that they will no longer work in Ubuntu 12.10.

After that, you will be prompted to restart the system. Close all unsaved work and press the “Restart Now” button to reboot your machine...

After reboot, you’ll see that the login screen has been changed (you know what to do here)...
