On Tuesday, Redmond-based software giant Microsoft started to roll-out a new software update for its Windows Phone 7 users, one that brings forth Copy & paste capabilities on handsets, along with a series of other enhancements as well. This is not the first update that Microsoft releases for Windows Phone 7, but it is the first major one, since it sports a nice range of improvements, meant to offer a better mobile experience to all users.

The new software update should be pushed to all users within a matter of weeks. According to Microsoft all Windows Phone 7 owners would be informed on the availability of the new software update, and they should download and install it on their devices as soon as possible.

After all, it does come with performance improvements, new features and the like, and should provide users with a great experience on the go.

Users can also check to see if the update is available for their devices, through going to Start, flicking left to the App list, and then hitting Settings > Phone update. Those who already selected Notify me there will be informed on the availability of this update.

When the handset is connected to a desktop PC, users would have to go to Start > Zune > Settings > Phone > Update to check for updates.

One of the most important conditions for a successful update process would be the availability of plenty of space on both the mobile phone and the computer.

“Before updating your phone, the Zune software and Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac will attempt to back up your phone data to your computer, so you'll need to know how much space your data is using on your phone,” Microsoft explains.

To check the needed storage space, users can go to Start, flick left to the App list, tap Settings Settings icon > About, and then have look at both the Total Storage and at the Available Storage space on the phone.

For each GB of data stored on the Windows Phone 7 handset, users would need a GB of free storage space on the computer to perform the backup.

In case the Zune software is not already present on the desktop computer, users would need to install it, and the same applies to the Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac. The update process cannot be performed without these applications.

Before proceeding with the software update, users would have to make sure that the battery inside their mobile phone is fully charged, and that the Internet connection the computer benefits from is a reliable one.

To update the Windows Phone 7 device, users would need to connect it to the desktop computer via an USB cable. The handset should remain connected throughout the update process.

The Zune software or Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac (the sync software) should start automatically when the phone is connected. If not, you can start it manually. In case the software needs being updated, allow it to install the new version, then restart it.

As soon as the sync software is up and running, the process can begin. For that, users would need to click Update Now in Zune, or click on Install Updates in the Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac.

In case a user misses the notification on the availability of this update, a new one would be sent in a matter of days. Those who would like to learn more info on the Windows Phone update process, as well as on other aspects of their devices, should head over to Microsoft's website here.
