Something you might want to do just for fun

The big screen of the iPhone 6 Plus undoubtedly opens a new world of possibilities when it comes to jailbreaks, emulation, and everything in between. One guy in China decided he’d pull off the most useless mod and installed Windows 98. Just for the heck of it.

Putting Windows on Apple hardware has always been a tantalizing prospect. Not only because of the fierce rivalry between the two tech companies, but because people want the best of all worlds. That’s how Parallels and VMWare Fusion came to be.

Apple has a bit of an advantage over Microsoft when it comes to running the other’s OS on their hardware. Mac users can install Windows freshly on their Mac just like they would on a regular computer. A utility called Boot Camp partitions the hard drive in such a way that any Mac instantly becomes a regular PC ready to be fed a Windows installation disk or image.

The same cannot be said about regular PCs. You need to perform a fair amount of hackery to get OS X to boot up on non-Apple hardware, but it can be done nevertheless. In fact, some would argue that Boot Camp involves just as much hassle as a Hackintosh. But we’re not here to discuss that.

Windows 98 runs (not so smoothly) on iPhone 6 Plus

What we’re here to look at is this guy’s Windows 98 installation on an iPhone 6 Plus. The convergence of ancient software with cutting edge hardware is indeed something to lo and behold. But that’s just about it. Nothing useful comes out of this mod, and there are more errors involved than there is actual usage. But the mere fact that this person was able to fully install the OS to the iPhone’s memory and then boot it at will is enough of a feat to deserve some coverage in the tech blogosphere.

No word on whether you can play any games using this configuration, but we’re assuming it’s not possible because of the huge discrepancies in input mechanisms (mouse + keyboard versus multi-touch).

If you'd like to know how to install Windows on your own iPhone, head over to the guy's post and read through the instructions. Just make sure you've brushed up on your Chinese skills.

Can you install XP? Hacker says yes

It may be a bit over the top to call user xyq058775 a hacker, but that’s apparently the kind of practice that was involved here. For those of you asking if you can put XP on your iPhone, the answer is a resounding yes. But not without some headaches.

According to xyq058775, you won’t be able to do it traditionally – i.e. using the iDos emulator – but he has some instructions for this as well. Gallery below.
