Apple says you can use your cylindrical Mac Pro on its side

The Mac Pro (Late 2013) model has been designed to operate in an upright (vertical) position, but its makers say you can also use it on its side. Just be more careful when you do that.

According to a Support document posted online by the Cupertino giant this week, the all-new cylindrical Mac Pro (which some like to compare to a trash bin), can be used both vertically, and horizontally.

“The Mac Pro (2013) has a fan system capable of cooling the computer in a vertical or horizontal orientation as long as you follow these guidelines,” Apple says.

KB article HT6099 outlines the basic procedure for using the Mac Pro on its side, including a scenario where the user stacks together multiple machines.

The main idea is to “not” obstruct the air flow at the top and bottom, and the I/O bay must be clear at all times.

Apple’s instructions (which basically state how to “not” handle your Mac horizontally) are outlined below.

• Provide enough space at each end of the computer for unrestricted airflow into the base and out the exhaust at the top. Make sure that the air intake and exhaust ports are not covered. • When using multiple Mac Pro (Late 2013) computers, do not direct the exhaust at the top of one Mac Pro towards the intake of another system. Place the computers side by side with a gap of at least several inches between them. • When on its side, secure the Mac Pro (Late 2013) to be sure that it doesn't roll. Place the computer on a protective surface that will not scratch or damage the enclosure. Note: The Apple Limited Warranty does not cover cosmetic damage to the enclosure. • Orient the computer so that the Input/Output (I/O) panel remains accessible during use.

Apple has also released the new and revised Mac Pro Environmental Report, noting the power efficiency of the computer, its recyclability, the materials used (including restricted substances), and more.
