Kensignton is announcing the new BungeeAir cases which combine software and hardware to physically and digitally secure an iPhone. According to the makers, they are the first of what will be a family of products.

Citing a recent YouGov study, Kensignton says it takes just a few moments to forget or lose a phone, while critical minutes can pass before an owner will notice.

Any Apple engineers carrying around iPhone 5 prototype units with them better listen up!

Statistics from the YouGov study which Kensington deems as “startling” reportedly showed that men are more likely than women to notice their mobile phone missing in less than 15 minutes. The percentage was 40% men vs. 29% women.

Some 28% of respondents between the ages of 18 and 24 are said to be able to notice their mobile phone missing within five minutes.

At age 55 or older, only 13% would realize their mobile phone was missing within five minutes, the study also said.

So, whatever profile you fit, Kensignton recommends the BungeeAir, a two-piece wireless tether for the iPhone comprised of a downloadable app and a small remote fob whose batteries will need to be replaced once every six months.

The fob can either be attached to a key chain, or carried in a pocket to maintain an active wireless connection.

When the connection is lost, an alarm is triggered, letting the phone owner know they’re no longer carrying it with them. Kensigton explains:

“Stretching the connection to its limit triggers an audible alert from the fob, and instantly activates password protection to secure the iPhone and prevent access to data or content.”

Interested parties will be able to buy the Kensington BungeeAir Power Case at Amazon.com and Kensington.com starting next month. Pricing has not been disclosed yet.

BungeeAir Protect cases will become available around the same time. In the meanwhile, you can download the free BungeeAir app and make your acquaintance.
