If you received an email from Yahoo asking you to reset your password, you were probably among those targeted by hackers.

The company has revealed that a security attack was identified, as someone was trying to gain unauthorized access to Yahoo Mail accounts. After the discovery, the company prompted affected users to reset passwords.

“Based on our current findings, the list of usernames and passwords that were used to execute the attack was likely collected from a third-party database compromise. We have no evidence that they were obtained directly from Yahoo’s systems,” Yahoo wrote in a blog post.

The company is already taking steps to protect users. “We are resetting passwords on impacted accounts and we are using second sign-in verification to allow users to re-secure their accounts,” Yahoo’s blog reads.

Furthermore, the company is working with law enforcement to find the perpetrators. The company’s engineers have also implemented additional measures to block such attacks.

So, if you were affected by the issue, you should make sure to follow the necessary steps to reset your password. Remember to pick something containing both letters and numbers, as well as capital and lowercase letters and special characters. It’s also advisable that you don’t pick one of the worst passwords ever.

Make sure you did not set the same password on multiple accounts. If your email is hijacked, it’s possible that the compromised data will be used to target your accounts on other webmail providers as well, at the minimum.

Furthermore, a while back, Yahoo implemented the two-step login system. It’s best if you choose to enable it, even though it may be a bother on most occasions. However, keeping your accounts safe is key.

These steps are fairly easy and don’t require too much of your time. They could keep your accounts safe and protect the private information within.
