LibreOffice 4.4 is the latest iteration of the famous office suite developed by The Document Foundation and released just a few days ago. This is a short tutorial that helps Ubuntu users install the latest version.
Ubuntu systems usually integrate a certain branch of LibreOffice during the support cycle for a particular version. For example, Ubuntu 14.10 comes with LibreOffice 4.3 by default, but it's possible to upgrade to a new branch by adding a PPA to the operating system, which is actually quite a simple procedure.
If you don't have an Ubuntu operating system (or some derivative), you don't have to worry. This is an important suite, so it's likely that the maintainers for various distros will be updating the packages soon enough, if they haven't done it already.
How to install LibreOffice 4.4 in Ubuntu
A PPA is just a third-party repository, and in the case of LibreOffice, it's an official one. This means that it's a PPA maintained by the LibreOffice team. It usually takes a day or two before the new version is made available in the PPA, and the latest 4.4 branch of the suite has finally arrived.
There are a couple of ways of adding the PPA, but we'll only detail the one that can be done through the terminal. Users just need to open a terminal and enter the following commands (root is needed for any installation)
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
LibreOffice 4.4 comes with one of the most important UI upgrades for the suite and a large number of other improvements. Be sure to check our initial report for more details about this release.
