It's a very simple installation that anyone can do

Diablo III and its expansion, Reaper of Souls, are amongst the most played games from Blizzard, and they are now making a comeback after Blizzard made some serious changes to the gameplay by introducing adventure mode and rifts.

Very few players go through Diablo III just for the story, they mostly do it for the loot. Blizzard saw this as an opportunity and introduced some interesting gameplay modes with the expansion Reaper of Souls. Now players can go in search of loot and other treasures in random maps, and the game has many players once more. Some of those players might want to play it on a Linux machine, and that can be done pretty easily.

Getting Diablo III to run on a Linux machine is not difficult, but users need to keep in mind that the game itself is pretty big, so you will need to have sufficient space on the HDD. 15GB should do just fine.

Wine is a lot more stable and efficient

The simplest way of running Diablo is to use one of the solutions available out there, such as Wine, PlayonLinux, or Crossover. The latter two are based on Wine, so we'll just use that one. I tested Diablo III on Ubuntu 15.04, but as long as you have Wine and proprietary driver, you should be able to run it, no matter the platform. For Ubuntu, you will need to add a PPA to the system, for the development branch of Wine. Just open a terminal and enter the following commands:

code
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install wine1.7
When the installation has been completed, you need to open the "Configure Wine" entry in your menu. From there you can choose to emulate Windows 8.1 and go to the tab called graphics. It's best to put a checkmark in the last option, "Emulate a virtual desktop" and define its size. If the game starts without this option, it will go full screen. If it crashes, it's likely that it will take the system with it.

Now, download the Battle.net client from Blizzard and install your copy of Diablo. You should be able to start the game and log in without any issue. Enjoy!
