The installation procedure is simple and fast

Xfce 4.12 has been released for a few days now and quite a few distros are already providing the necessary installation files in the repos. The Xubuntu development team has put together a PPA so that users of the 14.04 LTS and 14.10 branch will be able to install it easily.

Xubuntu is based on Ubuntu and it's an official flavor, so the procedure for adding a PPA and for installing packages from third-party repositories is pretty much the same. It can be done either from a terminal or from Software Sources GUI. The end result is the same and it shouldn't take too long to accomplish it.

As usual, installing a complex piece of software like Xfce can break your system or at the very least create some problems. Ideally, it would be a good idea to try it as a secondary system and not on a production machine. It's also quite possible that fixes and other various changes will arrive via this PPA in the coming weeks and months.

How to install Xfce 4.12 in Xubuntu

The Xfce 4.12 packages are only available for Xubuntu 14.04 LTS and Xubuntu 14.10. There is another entry in the PPA for Xubuntu 12.04 LTS, but it's not supported. All you need to do is to open a terminal and enter a few commands. Besides the regular 4.12 packages, you might also want to install a secondary PPA called "Xubuntu extras" that comes with a Pulseaudio plugin, xfdashboard, and a few others. Please bear in mind that you need to be root:

code
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xubuntu-dev/xfce-4.12
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xubuntu-dev/extras
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
That's pretty much all that you need to do. After the download and installation of the packages has been completed, you need to logout and log back in. Now you're running Xfce 4.12.
