One thing that has been missing in KDE as of late, good old Search and Launch.

Anyone know if it's okay to do this on Linux Mint 12 (Ubuntu-based) ?

Comment #4.1 by: Pawel on 01 Feb 2012, 08:50 GMT

I've done it on Linux Mint 12, and it's been working more or less fine, except for the fact that it's using up abnormally much processing power, even with no active processes running (and I've got a pretty high-end computer). This doesn't happen on Gnome. I wonder if it also happens on Ubuntu+KDE 4.8. Anyway, I'm going to remove it because of that. I'm going to see what happens on pure Kubuntu upgraded to 4.8, because I'm bent on switching to KDE sooner or later.

Tried upgrading pure Kubuntu to KDE 4.8. Result: a disaster. The whole desktop goes haywire, almost totally unresponsive. Couldn't even launch any emergency command with alt+F2, couldn't log out, the only option: reset button with the original Kubuntu CD in the drive.

Your article might have said a few words about minimum prerequisites before trying the instructions. Yes, there are the "release notes" and "install instructions" from the KDE project, but you don't even mention them or provide a read-this-first encouragement.

Can I do this on any v11.x based *-buntu? Does that include Mint-11 or Mint-12?

I followed your instructions on installing KDE; everything went well except there as a problem with libkactivities-bin. It couldn't be installed, and now when I try to either use apt-get -f install or apt-get autoremove (as suggested) I get the message that there is a problem processing libkactivities-bin. I remove the offending file and still get errors. I try uninstalling as you suggest as still get the same errors. And I can't update my sustem because of the same errors. So I'm stuck. Any suggestions?
