After another six months of hard work, the famous KDE Software Compilation (SC) suite reached version 4.6 on January 26th, 2010. With lots of bug fixes, many new features, new applications, breath-taking effects, KDE SC 4.6.0 is composed of the KDE Plasma Workspace, the KDE Applications and the KDE Development Platform.

Today's tutorial is for those of you who want to install KDE SC 4.6 on their Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) systems. In other words, with this guide, we will teach you, step by step, how to install KDE SC 4.6 on your existing Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) installation.

Editor's note: To eliminate the "terminal madness" for Linux beginners, we've used apt-url links in this tutorial. So, just click the links where it says "click the 'Install' button to install..." and a confirmation dialog will appear. Special thanks go to the Kubuntu developers for preparing the KDE SC 4.6.0 repos in such a short time, as usual!

Step 1 - Add KDE SC 4.6 Repositories

Hit the ALT+F2 key combination on your keyboard, check the "Run in terminal" option and paste the following command in the "Run Application" dialog:

gksu add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports

Enter your password when asked and hit the OK button. A terminal window will appear for a few seconds, and it will automatically close.

Hit the ALT+F2 key combination again, check the "Run in terminal" option and paste the following command in the "Run Application" dialog:

gksu apt-get update

Step 2 - Install KDE SC 4.6

All you need to do now is click the link below...

Click here to Install KDE SC 4.6

Wait a few seconds, and the Ubuntu Software Center application will appear. Click the "Install" button on the new window, to install the KDE SC 4.6.0 packages (enter your password when asked)...

Wait for the KDE SC 4.6 packages to be downloaded and installed...

...when the installation is over close Ubuntu Software Center and reboot the computer.

At the login screen, click on your username, go to the Session menu and select the KDE entry. Input your password and voilà... KDE4 fun on your Ubuntu desktop!

Editor's note: If you have autologin enabled, you will not be able to select the KDE session. So you need to log out from the GNOME session and select KDE from Session menu.

Use main server in preferences (for instance, in Synaptic)

actually the software center never opened for me. I just had a dialog box open that asked if I wanted to install additional software. also you didn't mention it would ask if you wanted to use GDM or KDM as a window manager or if it made a difference. I'm about to find out if everything went ok.

You could also add the ppa by opening software center then edit -> software sources -> other software -> add -> paste 'ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports' and then reload when prompted and install the kubuntu-desktop from the software center

Thanks for this easy-to-use tutorial. I used the terminal but clicked on the link for the installation. I use ubuntu sparingly but I like having KDE installed as well, especially the newest version.

Thanks again.

Can not install 'kubuntu-desktop' (E:Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.)
