Third-party mapping solutions providers jump in to help (capitalize)

A number of Apple customers upgrading to the new iOS 6 have found themselves in a world of hurt after discovering that they could no longer rely on the phone’s built-in mapping service as they did before.

While the percentage of users relying on iOS Maps is certainly not very high, such a key element of the operating system should certainly be more reliable.

As Apple works out the kinks, third-party mapping providers are jumping in to capitalize on the hype, promoting their alternatives to Apple’s Maps app in iOS 6.

A compilation of navigation / mapping apps over at AppShopper (an aggregator of App Store titles) offers a great selection of apps that partially replace the iOS Maps app, depending on one’s needs.

None of them offers the exact set of features found in iOS Maps, but it’s enough to go by until the Cupertino giant fixes its own Maps app.

One important note, though: none of the compiled apps is integrated into iOS 6, which means that tapping on location links in Safari, Mail, Contacts, etc. will always take you to Apple’s application. To avoid this, copy the URL, open your maps app of choice manually, and paste it into address / search field.
