The error is caused by the recent firmware update released by Microsoft

As you have probably heard, the firmware update rolled out by Microsoft for Surface Pro 2 tablets this month caused quite a lot of issues, so Redmond decided to pull the patch until they develop a stable version.

It turns out that one of the bugs caused by the firmware update is affecting the charging battery process, as many users confirmed in Microsoft's Community forums that the Surface Pro 2 won't charge properly.

The displayed message reads “Plugged In, Not Charging,” so all these users clearly need a working update as soon as possible.

One of the affected Surface Pro 2 owners also found a possible workaround, but Microsoft hasn't yet confirmed whether this indeed fixes the problems or not.

If you'd like to try this out for yourselves, “shut down your surface, then hold volume + and power button for 15 seconds, the Surface startup screen will flash (keep pressing), afterwards leave it charging,” one user recommends.

Of course, if this indeed repairs the problem on your Surface Pro 2, make sure you drop us a line to let other users know that this is a fully working trick, at least until Microsoft launches a patch.

As for the new firmware update, Microsoft has promised to release it after the holidays, as it's already working to determine the cause of all problems spotted on Surface Pro 2 tablets.

Here's what Microsoft said in a statement after pulling the new firmware from Windows Update:

“We are working to release an alternative update package as soon as possible.”

“The UEFI firmware that we released in the December update prevents some devices from entering sleep mode (and other low power states) properly during periods of inactivity. In order to release an updated version of the UEFI firmware we need to test the new version with the other drivers in the set to make sure we are not releasing yet another unknown state to customer machines.”
