Microsoft is yet to provide a fix on the “Secure Boot Isn’t Configured Correctly” error experienced on Windows 8.1 by a number of users who are trying to update from Windows 8, but it seems like Dell’s staff might have found a workaround.

A post on Dell’s support forums provides step-by-step instructions on how to fix the problem, with several users confirming that this workaround removes the watermark desktop from the Secure Boot notification.

According to user lhgarrett who posted the message, these tips come from Dell’s Technical Support and only work on Dell machines.

First of all, you need to reboot your computer and enter the Setup Utility by pressing the F2 key at boot. Access the “Boot” tab, go over to the “Secure Boot” option and hit the enter key. Enable “Secure Boot” and hit the F10 key to save the changes.

Try to load Windows 8.1 and in case the booting process is completed, the watermark should be gone. Then restart the PC once again, press F2 to enter the Setup Utility and access the main tab. This time, you need to hit the F9 key to load the default system configuration. Select the “Yes” option to “Load Optimized Defaults” and then press the “F10” key to save the changes.

Everything should be back to normal and Windows 8.1 should run without any Secure Boot warning on the desktop.

Some other users have reported the Secure Boot option in the BIOS menu is greyed out, which means that they can’t make any modifications. Consumers are thus advised to load the default system configuration and then try to change the settings once again.

Of course, a Microsoft fix is most likely on its way, so unless you have the time to cope with this kind of errors, it’s better to wait for an official workaround from Redmond.
