You know what they say about a picture being worth more than a thousand words? Well, some pictures are even more than that. If they hold a particular memory from your past, they could well be priceless.

If you’ve found yourself rummaging through hundreds of emails trying to find that one awesome photo from last summer and can’t seem to find it, download Lost Photos from the Mac App Store and let it work its magic.

“If you’ve ever sent or received an image via email – Lost Photos is a must-have app! Imagine the joy of re-discovering photos that you haven’t seen for months or even years – photos emailed with friends and family, places you’ve visited, or thousands of other memories,” says MacPhun, a veteran Mac developer.

Lost Photos is actually the first app of its kind – capable of securely scanning hundreds, even thousands of emails and able to extract the images from them.

“All photos are downloaded to your computer, making it ultra easy to view them, archive them to permanent storage or even share them again,” says the developer.

Customers can download Lost Photos and use it for free to locate and download 100 photos from all the email accounts that exist on a computer. To use it indefinitely (beyond 100 photos), a $2.99 / €2.59 user license is required (via in-app purchase).

The software is extremely easy to set up and use, and you can go about your work as Lost Photos looks up images for you in the background.

It safely logs into your email accounts using the same encryption as the providers and supports all popular email domains: Gmail/Google Apps, Hotmail, Yahoo!, AOL, iCloud, MobileMe/.Mac, Ymail, Rocketmail, AT&T, British Telecom Yahoo, Xtra New Zealand. Even more domains will be added in a future update, according to MacPhun.

“Services that Lost Photos doesn’t support currently include Verizon, SBC, Comcast, BigPond, or any other account not specifically listed. We hope to add these services in the near future.”

You can view image thumbnails and/or save the full-size photos to your Mac, and you can even filter out images of certain types or sizes. Sharing options include Facebook, Twitter, or email, and users can import all images into iPhoto, or any other photo manager, to make sure they never get lost again.

MacPhun promises to take everyone’s privacy seriously, meaning “Lost Photos does not collect or store your login information and does not communicate information from your email to any outside server. Additionally, Lost Photos transmits data to and from email servers using the Transport Layer Security (TLS) Cryptographic protocol.”
