Workaround found through iBackupBot, an iPhone file browser and editor

It has been revealed that you can now enable the Panorama mode for the iOS 5 Camera by fiddling with an app called iBackupBot. You basically just modify your own iOS backup file and restore.

Not long after @chpwn & friends spilled the beans on a hidden panorama mode in the iOS Camera app, a jailbreak solution was made available via Cydia to allow others to enable it.

As of today, you no longer have to jailbreak your iPhone / iPod touch if you want the feature enabled. However, you will be required to deal with some code.

Don’t worry, the steps involved don’t require you to invent any. It’s already laid out for you in the instructions below (via funkyspacemonkey.com, edited by Softpedia):

1. Download iBackupBot (formerly known as iTunes Backup Manager), a tool that helps you browse, view, export and even EDIT files backed up to iTunes. It’s available for both Mac and Windows.

2. Connect your iPhone and back it up via iTunes.

3. Open iBackupBot and find the backup that you just made via iTunes. Select and load it.

4. Find the file named: Library/Preferences/com.apple.mobileslideshow.plist

5. You are no required to add a key to this .plist file. Open the file and, near the bottom, add a key (enableFirebreak) and a string (YES), as shown in the image below.

6. Save your modifications and restore your iPhone with the modified iTunes backup right from iBackupBot.

7. Open your camera app, tap on options, and select Panorama mode.

Needless to point out, this can still be considered hacking, but at least you’re not performing a system-wide modification.

Apple is on track to release a new iOS software update soon. Since the cat’s already out of the bag, it would be nice to see the company enable ‘official’ access to the feature.
