Yesterday, Microsoft officially announced the immediate availability of the Lumia Cyan upgrade for Nokia Lumia users out there, providing them not only with the features and enhancements that Windows Phone 8.1 has to offer, but also with some additional enhancements.

The company also announced that the update would be available for all Windows Phone 8 Lumia devices in a matter of weeks, yet some lucky people out there should be already receiving it.

Grabbing the update is very easy, as Lumia devices will automatically check on the availability of the new software and will inform users when it can be downloaded and installed.

According to a recent post on Nokia Conversations, Nokia Lumia phones will check every week to see whether the update has landed and will automatically download the new software when the smartphone is connected to a Wi-Fi network.

However, users can change this setting, and they can also manually check on the availability of the update, through going to Settings > Phone Update.

Just keep in mind that it is better to download the update over a Wi-Fi connection, since the process will be faster and no mobile data charges will occur.

However, users should also know that Lumia Cyan will actually arrive on devices in the form of two updates. As soon as the first of them has been installed, they should check on the availability of the second one, so as to make sure that all the necessary new files have been installed.

The aforementioned blog post also notes that, due to the fact that this update is fairly large, devices might need up to two hours to complete the download and installation process. Users should also consider keeping their phones plugged in during this time.

The handset will restart a few times during the installation process, so there’s nothing to worry about when that happens. However, as soon as the process has been completed, users might need to re-enter some of their passwords, it seems.

Once Lumia Cyan has been installed on Lumia phones, applications already present on devices might require some updates too, in order to ensure that they can deliver new functionality enabled by the OS. However, the smartphone will automatically inform users on new app updates.

Said blog post also notes that users will be able to turn on automatic app updates in the new OS flavor, through going to Settings, swiping left to “applications,” and then going to “Store” to enable the option.

What’s interesting to note is the fact that those who have already installed the Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview release might need to revert their devices to a commercial OS iteration in order to get the new platform release. For that, they will need the Nokia Software Recovery Tool, which has been detailed on this support page.
