Simple trick to use more beautiful icons in Windows 10

They say system icons aren’t really that important when it comes to the success a specific operating system can achieve, but it turns out that the new icons that are part of Windows 10 Technical Preview are actually attracting more criticism than one would ever imagine.

Often described as ugly, childish, or simply outdated, the new icons were introduced in the technical preview builds for testing purposes, and even though Microsoft is expected to change them before the final version of the operating system gets the green light, testers are already criticizing the company for its choices.

And yet, those who do not like the Windows 10 desktop icons can easily change them with others downloaded from the Internet or even created by themselves, so follow these steps to do this in just a few seconds.

Few clicks and voila!

First and foremost, make sure that you download new icons from the web and save them in a separate folder on the local drives. All icons need to be in .ico format, but .icl, .dll, and .exe packs are also supported.

Once you find a good-looking set of icons, right-click the desktop and hit the “Personalize” option. On the left side of the screen, click on “Change desktop icons” and you should see all icons that can be configured to show up on your desktop by default.

Although the Recycle Bin icon is the most criticized in Windows 10, we’ve made this tutorial with the This PC icon, so just select it in the settings window and click on “Change Icon.” Browse to the folder where you saved the downloaded icons, pick the one you like, click OK, then “Apply” and you’re good to go.

If you also want to change folder icons, just launch File Explorer, right-click the folder whose icon you want to replace, click on “Properties” and go over to the “Customize” tab. Click the “Change icon” option at the bottom of the screen and select the new icon you wish to use.

Before changing anything, you are also recommended to create a backup of your existing configuration, just in case something goes wrong and you need to revert to the previous settings.
