How to Set Up Yahoo Mail as The Default Email Client

Yahoo Mail is a very popular email technology that has millions of users in every corner of the world. That's why numerous consumers are looking for simple solutions to access and control
their accounts as well as send and receive messages. As you probably know, Yahoo provides POP3 support only for the premium members so, if you want to set up your Yahoo Mail account to work with an email client, you should pay for it. Now, there are numerous applications that allow you to control the Yahoo Mail account but what if you're able to set the mail service as the default application in your Windows operating system?

Well, this can be done by following some simple steps. Before presenting them to you, let me explain it a little bit. First of all, this procedure would allow you to open straight up the Yahoo Mail Compose window once you click on a mailto link that usually pops out your email client. This way, you can write a message in a matter of seconds without having to load the official page of Yahoo, click on mail and then login into your account. Also, this trick works with Internet Explorer and Firefox, so every time you click on an email address it will automatically open a browser instance to write the message.

So, here's what you must do: go over to Control Panel (Start/Settings/Control Panel) and click on 'Internet Options'. This should open the 'Internet Properties' window that allows you to configure the Internet access details. Click on the 'Programs' tab and, in the 'Email drop-down' menu, select Yahoo Mail. If you can't see Yahoo Mail in the list, there is no problem, all you need to do is install Yahoo Messenger and it should be done. There are also other ways to do this, but this is quite the easiest one. Hit OK and it should be done.

Worked like a charm for me. Yahoo was already in the drop-down menu. Thanks!

This doesn't help when Yahoo mail isn't on the drop-down menu and Yahoo messenger can't be installed because Messenger version 9 requires Windows 2000 or above, which I don't have.

What are the "other ways to do this"? There used to be a small Active-X program to do this. It seems to me a Registry change is what's needed. What is it?

Unfortualtey this did not work for me. I installed Yahoo Messenger 9 but I still don't have a menu item in that Mail options list. It only includes the three Microsoft products, Outlook, Outlook Express and Windows Live Hotmail. I'm using XP w/ SP2.

Is there any way else to enable this besides installing Y! Messenger?

I tried this, but Windows 7 does not allow me to select a program other than a Windows related program. There is no drop down list of e-mail vindors.

Same as above. Installed Yahoo messenger. It never gave me the option to set the default email nor does it show up in the programs list.
They need to update this.

I followed the instructions above and made YAHOO as my default e-mail in my Windows 7. However, when I tried to link and send e-mail sometimes from client site, I still received the message:

'Couldn't perform this operation, because the default mail client is not installed properly'

What should be done to fix this issue?

Thank you

I tried this, and it didn't work for me either.

I have 2 self built p\c's; Windows X.P Home & Windoes X. P Pro... both 32 bit op systems, 1 brand name store bought p\c; WINDOWS 7 PRO, as well as on laptop; WINDOWS X.P HOME. Yahoo messenger is installed on all of my computers.....Outlook express or MSN is the only mail client avaliable, unless I open yahoo manually, OR, copy & paste inside of Yahoo mail to the reciepient that I want the e-mail to go to.

The posted advide I read here once more again: DIDN'T WORK
