How To Prevent Skyrim From Updating Itself With Patch 1.2

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim finally received its long awaited patch 1.2 yesterday but, from what we could gather from the comments we received from our various articles, it doesn’t really fix anything that important, instead just resolving some obscure issues that were hardly felt by players of the massive role playing game.

What’s more, instead of fixing any critical issues or patching some essential broken quests, the update causes some peculiar glitches, from breaking the resistances of the players to magic or such attacks, to causing dragons to fly backwards.

So, as a public service, we decided to make a guide, albeit a belated one, on how you can prevent Skyrim from updating itself with the newest patch on the PC, PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 platforms.

First up, on the PC, Steam makes it a bit tricky to prevent itself from automatically updating your games, but it’s still quite possible.

First up, you need to go into your Steam Games library, right click on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, select Properties, and then, in the new window, go to the Updates tab and select from the Automatic Updates drop-down menu the ‘Do Not Automatically Update This Game’ option.

Alternately, you can also start up Steam in its Offline mode and play without the program checking for any update.

The PlayStation 3 platform also automatically warns you of updates for your game, but you can easily prevent it from doing so by disconnecting it from its Internet connection. This can be done either by pulling out your Ethernet cable or by deleting your wireless connection settings.

On the Xbox 360 platform, you can also easily prevent the game from checking for updates by disconnecting the console from any online connection, just like with the PlayStation 3.

Did you already make the jump to patch 1.2 for Skyrim or did you wait it out to see if it’s worth downloading? Share your experience below.

did cancel auto-update in time. now my game is busted (PC). my character was a warrior with lots of damage resistance buffs... now they are COMPLETELY NOT WORKING.

Hey Magnus, try to back up your save game files (My Documents/My Games/Skyrim) and then follow our guide to reinstall Skyrim and keep it with patch 1.1 http://news.softpedia.com/news/How-to-Rollback-Your-Skyrim-Steam-Version-to-Before-Patch-1-2-237801.shtml
Hope it helps!

I am so glad I waited a bit. I have been playing in offline mode on 1.1.
While i experience the occasional program crash, and missing textures. I save quite often and simply restart skyrim when that happens. I have been afraid to login to steam for fear it will automatically update, so thanks for the info on how to disable autoupdates in steam!

After this new patch my game won't even start. Clicking on start on the launcher elicits a 5 second pause before doing NOTHING at all. Rolling back to 1.1 is not a viable option for me because of a broken optical drive and monthly download limits (win XP). Why don't the devs do the right thing and use Steam's fancy auto update feature to negate the 1.2 patch?
I haven't been able to play all week because of work, now when I get the chance to play I can't because of a pointless (silent) update.
P.S. It was extremely hard to write this without using "creative" language.

I had automatic updates canceled, but when the steam software updates it forgets all of your preferences :(

What a failure. Skyrim was working fine until 1.2 and now I cannot play for 10 minutes without a crash/

I feel your pain. I had Steam configured to "Do not automatically update this game", too - only to suddenly run into all kinds glitches and problems. Then discovered that Steam downloaded the update against my will :(

Thanks for the hint about Steam forgetting its preferences, at least now I have an idea what happened.

I will try this rollback. If unsucessful, I will be uninstalling skyrim and never buying a Bethesda game again. Diablo III is coming out soon, so there are alternatives. Here isfingers crossed! Will let you know if it works.
