While actively working on a new version of PwnageTool that supports as many iDevices as possible under the new iOS 4.1 (perhaps even the upcoming iOS 4.2) software update, the iPhone Dev Team has been able to roll out a beta version of its redsn0w jailbreak tool which iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G users can employ to break from Apple’s shackles.

“We’ve released a beta version of redsn0w for the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G at FW 4.1 or 4.0,” the infamous team of hackers announced earlier this week.

“It uses the same pwnage2 DFU-mode exploit that we’ve been using since the 2.x days,” the Team said. “It does not include the SHAtter exploit developed by pod2g. Nothing new is revealed to Apple with this jailbreak.”

Jailbreaking is not recommended for several reasons, one of them being security, but if you’re going to do it, at least do it following the instructions offered up by the tool’s makers themselves.

According to the hackers, this beta release of redsn0w supports iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G, for now. The tool can be employed only on Macintosh computers, and works with stock 4.1 or 4.0 IPSW files from Apple (the team said that a Windows version is being coded as well).

This being said, the following lines are the actual instructions provided by the iPhone Dev Team for jailbreaking an iPhone 3G or iPod touch 2G using redsn0w 0.9.6b1.

"===== How do I use it? =====

If you’ve already updated your device to 4.1 or 4.0, the next steps are:

Launch the beta redsn0w 0.9.6b1 Select your stock 4.1 or 4.0 ipsw (you’ve already used this to update your device to 4.0) Select “Install Cydia” and click “Next”.  Use DFU mode to install the jailbreak.

Note: If you choose to 'Enable battery percentage', you actually toggle that off and on via Settings->General->Usage."

Softpedia doesn't encourage jailbreaking / unlocking the iPhone / iPod touch / iPad, or any other device.

This article has a purely informational purpose and doesn't, in any way, suggest that you should hack your Apple device.

Using hacks may render your device unusable, or may reduce the quality of your experience employing the respective device.

If you choose to download and install jailbreak tools, you will do so at your own risk. Unlocking / jailbreaking your iPhone / iPod touch / iPad may violate your warranty or the EULA with Apple and / or your cellular-service provider.
