Is FlexiSPY a virus, trojan or just a regular application?

FlexiSPY is one of the most frequently used applications when it comes to monitoring everything that a mobile phone user does with its device. Although the producing company considers it a mere program, many people see it as an insidious and unwelcomed software.

Who in the world would like being monitored in absolutely all aspects of using the mobile phone? With FlexiSPY, a third party will receive information on the time and duration of all placed calls. Moreover, it will also receive SMS and e-mail messages that the user sends and receives.

Another shocking aspect about this application is that it can remotely turn on the handset's microphone and reveal the actual location of the user. This means that what a user is doing can be listened to without him knowing anything about this. With this feature, the personal mobile phone acts just like a hidden bug that gets to be carried everywhere by the unsuspecting owner.

Vervata, the producing company defends their FlexiSPY program by saying that the application "does NOT self replicate, it does NOT pretend to be something it is not, and it ALWAYS requires conscious human action for installation".

Still, there might be some problems with that logic. Indeed, FlexiSPY needs conscious human action for being installed, but whose conscience is that? Not the user's, for sure. Actually, the person who installs FlexiSPY on someone's phone acts like a hacker and has a great amount of control over the functions of the device.

There is no need to bring to question the moral aspects of resorting to the use of such programs. Let's just say that F-Secure, Symantec and Kapersky Labs all classify the application as being either a virus, a spyware or a trojan. The main reason for this is that once installed onto any Symbian, Windows Mobile or Blackberry-based device, it gives the possibility of huge control over the handset to a remote user.
