14 DAY TRIAL // On the last episode of “How I Met Your Mother,” the show that is preparing its upcoming finale after 9 years of stories about how one guy eventually meets the mother of his children, there was a plot twist that can be likened to a stab wound for most fans.
Viewers were brought ten years into the future in a brief flash-forward that left a lot of room open for speculation. In it, Ted and the Mother were recounting old stories, just like Ted and the gang would often do, and the subject of Robin's wedding came up.
At this point, Ted says that he and the rest of the gang were surprised to see Robin's mom coming to the wedding after all. To this, the Mother replies with little surprise, “What mother is going to miss her daughter's wedding.” And this is when Ted burst into tears.
Many fans of the show thought that this meant the Mother would die in the future, which kind of explains the whole point of the show, with Ted starting telling his kids the story of how he met their mother. It was merely a confirmation of the rumor that has been silently yet persistently floating around on the Internet for years, according to Entertainment Weekly.
This just adds new facts to that theory, and many are hoping that it doesn't turn out to be true. After the last episode, many fans took to Twitter to show their hopes that their theory doesn't end up proving to be true and that the show's creators don't give a sad, albeit believable ending.
There are some voices that claim this is all just a ruse from producers to get viewers believing that a tragic finale is coming, and then, when the final episode is played out, to reveal that the Mother eventually survives the unnamed thing that almost killed her.
This would be more in tune with a sitcom, a funny show that has made people laugh for years, instead of giving it a sad ending that leaves people in tears and serves as a grim reminder that life is not always fair.
So far, the show's creators, Craig Thomas and Carter Bays haven't commented on the possible death of the Mother, leaving speculations to run rife. They are known as people who carefully planned the entire path of their series ahead of air time, as it's been revealed that even the ending, the finale episode was shot at the very beginning, when all the actors were still young.
So it's not inconceivable that they would have planned this entire innuendo in order to scare their audiences, just before revealing a happy end to their long-running series. This is certainly what most fans are hoping for.
