New gadget for Google Desktop

In case you're not all that familiar with Twitter, it's a service that allows the communication between friends, family, co-workers etc., through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to just one simple question: "What are you doing?"

It might sound a bit weird to constantly update your status every time you switch between activities but it's not like that at all. Your mom wants to know whether you've eaten and she'll be happy to see that on the screen without having to go through the usual chatting involved with regular IM services or your colleagues will be more than happy to know that you're stuck in traffic instead of attending that most important meeting. Well "more than happy" is just a bit out there, but they'll surely appreciate knowing where you are.

It's a service that can maintain a very strong connection between you and your loved ones and although it might sound strange in that "Big Brother" kind of way, you can always stop the updates and even set quiet times on Twitter when you don't want to be interrupted.

The new gadget, suggestively and most creatively dubbed "Twitter gadget" started out as a way to feed its developer's, that is Michael Singleton's own addiction to Twitter. It grew to be everything he had imagined it to be and although it doesn't do everything the original service does, what it manages to do, is done quite well. Its interface is simple and the design is most pleasant to the eyes and brightens up the sidebar.

This is the perfect example of how a personal obsession can grow and turn out to be a relief for many of us, and I'm strictly talking about the Twitter fans. An overall opinion about the gadget? It's sleek, robust and it is very well timed to hit the market.
