After 8 years of ratings gold (with some hiccups along the way), Fox's medical drama “House M.D.” is over. The season finale and final episode aired last night, marking the last time fans will see the eccentric doctor and brilliant diagnostician in action.

We're not going to spoil the ending for you, especially since there are ways to find out what happens if you really want to know.

We will say this much: as promised the day before it aired, the finale was not what one might have expected.

E! News caught up with Hugh Laurie and the other members of the cast and the crew of “House” at the Fox wrap party and, in between trying to get them to talk about the ending, found out how they all feel about the show ending.

As Hugh Laurie puts it so wonderfully (video below), all good things come to an end and they all knew this from day one.

Sadly, this realization does not make the parting any easier.

“It is very sad. But it's one of those things. I mean, nothing goes on forever. We knew this would happen, from the first day we knew this would happen,” Laurie says.

“So the fact that we've come this far and lasted this long is an amazing and joyous thing for which we should be extremely grateful, and are by the way. We are very grateful,” he adds.

Robert Sean Leonard agrees: these past 8 years have been an amazing ride and he was honored to be on it, together with his castmates and, of course, the millions of fans who watched the show.

“It's been a great run. For me the most exciting part of this job has always been the people because the one thing I have missed in my life is any kind of continuity,” Leonard explains.

“I'm a theater actor, so I'm used to jobs lasting about six months. So coming into work and seeing the same people for eight years has been very unique and for me enjoyable and I'll miss that,” he adds.

Hugh Laurie also talked about going back to the UK and being happy to speak like himself again, while the show's creator David Shore promised a memorable but unexpected ending.

And that it was.
