Is he really number 1 material?

As the end of yet another year is not too far away, we're starting to get a closer look at the people and events that shaped it and made the headlines in 2007. AskMen.com has just released a top which ranks 49 of the most influential men in 2007, as voted by more than one million users who cast their votes online over a one-month period. What we did was to take the first five Alpha males ranked and have a look at the reasons for which they seem to be so popular. And then give our own opinions about it. So sit back and enjoy - and don't forget to let us know what you think and whether you agree with their choices and our comments. You can also check out the whole Top 49 HERE.

Number 1 - David Beckham

What the people at AskMen.com think:

"Global soccer icon David Beckham became the $250-million man when he (and wife Victoria) moved to Beverly Hills to play for the Los Angeles Galaxy of the MLS. Between his tremendous talent, English charm, stylish wardrobe, and slick haircuts, Becks is single-handedly making soccer relevant stateside. Because of his achievements, he's been a consecutive AskMen.com list-topper, and has shown his appreciation by saying, "I am honored to be recognized once again by the AskMen.com community. I would like to thank everyone for their support"".

What we think:

No offense to Becks, but we feel that while he continues to be an icon from many points of view (charity, fashion and style included) he's simply not done enough over the past year to justify coming in at number one. He has been dubbed as "over-rated" in the past, and it seems that he's still managing to capture people's imaginations by looking pretty and having a very active PR department in charge of his image. Becks is definitely a charmer, but apart from a very active social life he hasn't had a very good year professionally speaking, and I'm not sure nude pictorials with his wife qualify as "influential work".

Number 2 - Matt Damon

What the people at AskMen.com think:

Cute and talented

"Matt Damon spent the summer of 2007 entertaining audiences with two of the most successful trilogies in recent history, appearing in both Ocean's Thirteen and The Bourne Ultimatum. Matt is scheduled to close out the year with a cameo role in Francis Ford Coppola's highly anticipated romance Youth Without Youth".

What we think:

We totally agree. Matt Damon is a very good actor, who has managed to keep up the good work with a series of excellent performances, while cutting an otherwise very elegant and discrete figure. A big thumbs up!

Number 3 - Timbaland

What the people at AskMen.com think:

The real 2007 sensation

"Timbaland is both prolific and influential and, this year, it has been virtually impossible to escape music he has had a hand in making. 2007 was Timbaland's year for reaping benefits from monumentally successful projects, like his work with Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado, Elton John, and Missy Elliott on Timbaland Presents Shock Value. He has also made a variety of appearances in support of the album and started working on a boatload of new projects, like a new album with Madonna".

What we think:

Timbaland has had an amazing year, and it's good to finally see him reap some spotlight glory along with the backstage big bucks. We feel he should have been awarded first place without a doubt. While being extremely talented himself, he also has that uncanny ability that allows him to spot talents and bring out the best in those he deems worthy - not to mention a great nose for profit and enough courage to embark in long term, earth-shattering projects and collaborations. A big round of applause for him and hope he keeps it up.

Number 4 - Roger Federer

What the people at AskMen.com think:

The tennis powerhouse comes in fourth place
Enlarge picture
"The "Swiss Sensation" has arguably transformed himself into the best tennis player in decades -- perhaps ever. But for all of his accomplishments, Roger Federer saved some of his best for 2007. Not only did he dominate the sport, but he flattened his closest competitors, Andy Roddick and Rafael Nadal, and took home three of the four Grand Slams. Furthermore, Federer's victory at this year's Australian Open made him the only male player to have won three Grand Slams on three separate occasions. He tops the money list, and will undoubtedly finish as the top ranked player in the world, which he has been since 2004".

What we think:

We're in two minds here. If we're talking career, then Federer's professional achievements leave the glamorous but ever absent Becks in the dust. This guy has had an amazing year, and he deserves a spot in the top five without a doubt. And while he's not as much of a charmer as David is, he sure makes up for it in personal style. So ranking fourth is OK with us - and we hope he will keep up his thrilling career and good looks.

Number 5 - Justin Timberlake

What the people at AskMen.com think:

Really bringing sexy back

"Though Justin Timberlake spent the bulk of 2007 touring in support of his wildly successful second solo album, FutureSex/LoveSounds, the multifaceted performer took a substantial leap forward in earning the respect of an entirely new audience with appearances in several well-received films. Specifically, his dramatic work in the critically acclaimed films Alpha Dog and Black Snake Moan proved that he's more than just another pretty face. Simultaneously, his popularity among the tween set was cemented with his role in the animated blockbuster hit Shrek the Third".

What we think:

Justin definitely HAS brought sexy back with the ultra-glamorous, urban sounds of his FutureSex/LoveSounds album. Not so much of a testosterone bomb, but he's definitely sexy, smart and has a promising career ahead. A big thumbs up for his collaboration with Timbaland, and hope they keep it up. It would be good if he took some anger management lessons, though, and a little more consideration for the fans would also be nice.
