The development team working on the new Tomb Raider video game have revealed some of the features that they have cut from the game, including a young girl that at one point was set to be Lara Croft’s companion.

Karl Stewart, who is the game director working at Crystal Dynamics, has told The Official PlayStation Magazine that, “One of the hardest decisions was that we knew we needed to make a change. We looked at all the games that were out at the time, studied them, did research, read reviews. And we realized that we needed to make something new.”

The team needed to show the main character of Tomb Raider in a new light and the girl companion would have allowed her to show a new side of herself.

The developer also revealed that the team wanted to include a horse and riding in the new game but had to drop the idea because it required more work to make the entire game open world.

Stewart also talked about the new weapon that Lara Croft was wielding, the bow, and stated, “The short answer is, bows are sexy. It’s the in thing right now, from Hunger Games all the way through to Avengers.”

The Tomb Raider director also believes that bows somehow create emotion and allow gamers to better connect with Lara Croft.

He mentioned the James Bond movie series and the changes that it had gone through from Sean Connery to Pierce Brosnan as one of the main inspirations for the changes that had been made to Tomb Raider.

The new game will see Lara Croft exploring a mysterious island as she slowly acquires the skills required to survive and defeat her enemies.

The new Tomb Raider will be launched on the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3 and the PC on March 5, 2013.
