Earlier this month, high officials in Hong Kong announced that the region was to destroy about 28 tons of ivory that it came to own after seizing it from poachers and illegal traders.

Recent news on the topic says that Hong Kong will not crush its ivory stockpile into bits and pieces, as the United States did just last year, but destroy it by incineration.

Interestingly enough, it would appear that the material will not be gotten rid of all at the same time. On the contrary, Tree Hugger says that it will take the region about 1-2 years to burn the ivory.

Besides, Hong Hong intends to keep some of this material, and use it to raise awareness of how important it is to end wildlife crime.

Should things go according to plan, the region will start setting some of its ivory stockpile on fire sometime in the second half of this year.
