14 DAY TRIAL // Playing Homeworld Remastered Collection is a joy for me as a long-term fan of the franchise and lover of the strategy genre, and I suspect the same is true for most if not all those who played the originals and even for those who are experiencing them for the first time.
Gearbox has not yet offered any information on the sales generated by the title, but they seem to be solid, which means that, if the company sees that there's a solid market for this kind of title, we might be soon hearing more about a full-fledged sequel for the series.
Homeworld 3 has been something that die-hard fans have been thinking about for the better part of the last ten years and it would be great to see how the franchise could evolve, the kind of story a new game would explore and the way the mechanics would be upgraded.
Gearbox does not have a history of working on space-based real time strategy titles, but they have shown, with Borderlands, that they can deliver innovative takes on already established genres.
The Remastered Collection is a testament to the way quality can endure despite the passage of time, and it would be great to add a new Homeworld title to the list when we look back on the franchise in another ten years.
A focus on making space special
No other title since Homeworld 2 managed to make space feel like both a work of art and a dangerous battlefield, maybe except Sins of a Solar Empire (which works at another scale).
If Gearbox is serious about creating a sequel, it needs to make sure that the emotions their title can generate are powerful and that it finds a way to tell a story that resonates.
The studio also needs to find a way to keep fleet building and management at the center of the experience, giving players tools to control the way their ships move and engage the enemy, while also making sure that they can simply spend time zooming in to take in the action.
Homeworld Remastered Collection is a great way to experience again what the series can offer, but we really need Gearbox to add to the series and to do so with a focus on quality.
