Home Ultrasound Imaging, Via USB

Adjust text size:

The medical technology has advanced quite a lot during the past few years, due to the discoveries from all the tech areas related to it.

One of the most important trends that has become quite visible lately is that of developing medical devices for the general use, which require just a minimum level of training, and a very good example is Ppups, an ultrasound probe which requires just an ordinary computer in order to work.

Ppups (Plug and Play Ultrasound Probe System) is the first complete ultrasound imaging system that has been built right into a small USB-compatible probe. The device acquires high quality Mode B images, which it then transmits directly to a PC, for processing and for the software removal of the analog signal noise caused by traveling through a cable. Moreover, the user can adjust the main features of the image (brightness, contrast, etc.), in order to obtain a better final image.

The device can be utilized by anyone, because all the user has to do is connect the Ppups to the computer's USB port, install the associated software and then start the scanning operation. Ppups is offered in 4 different versions, of 3.5 MHz, 5.0 MHz, 7.5 MHz and 12MHz, the frequencies of the most common ultrasound applications, and its only major disadvantage is its price, of about 3700 dollars, which makes more accessible rather to private medical practices than the general public.

We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there. That's why we thought it would be a good idea to create an email address for you to help us a little in finding gadgets we missed. Interesting links are bound to be posted with recognition going mainly to those who submit. The address is .

I was wondering how this product compares to UView, a new company offering a similar device in the $500 range?
