MythTV, a Digital Video Recorder and home media center hub featuring automatic commercial detection/skipping, intelligent schedule recording, parental control, remote administration, and many more other functions, is now at version 0.27.1.

The developers of MythTV don't make releases too often. In fact, the last version before this one was made available back in September 2013. You would imagine that after all this time the version number would change dramatically, but it hasn’t.

In the case of MythTV, the build number doesn't matter too much because the developers have made so many changes and improvements that it's now difficult to care about anything else. In fact, this is probably one of the biggest releases ever made and it's obvious that a lot of work has been put into it.

“0.27.1 is more than your traditional point release: 0.27.1 is our best release ever. While it doesn't have major new user features, it has received over 340 improvements. Lots have been rewritten under the hood to provide the best user experience ever. In particular, and to make the critics quiet, LiveTV has received an extreme level of attention. If you are still running an older version of MythTV, now is the time to upgrade,” said the devs in the changelog.

According to the developers, improvements have been made for the in LiveTV startup and channel change times (this will allow for much faster changes between channels), the ability to seek across the entire LiveTV playback session has been added, the IPTV and RTSP recorder has been updated and now includes IPv6 support, FreeBSD 10 is now officially supported, the appearance and readability on Mac OS has been improved, the metadata matching is now better, and the UPnP server has been improved as well.

Also, various improvements have been implemented in the VDPAU playback, support has been added for H264 9 and 10-bit videos, FFMpeg has been upgraded to 1.2.6, the internal network ringbuffer has been rewritten for better streaming with MythBackend regardless of network quality, network connections will now automatically resume when backend is restarted, various AirPlay improvements have been implemented, and MythZoneMinder has been updated to work with ZoneMinder 1.26 and later.

These are just a few of the changes and fixes that users will find in this version. Also keep in mind that you will download the source and not the binary file.

A comprehensive changelog can be found in the official wiki. You can download MythTV 0.27.1 right now from Softpedia.
