The 3TB storage threshold is one that Western Digital and Seagate have already reached, and Hitachi figured it would be best to catch up quick, so it unveiled a trio of 3TB units of its own, in addition to lower-capacity siblings.

What Hitachi did was unveil the new members of the Deskstar series of hard disk drive units, along with three Hitachi XL Desk external units, though only three of the newcomers have 3TB of storage, namely the highest-end models of each series..

Hitachi's internal 3TB ones go by the names of Deskstar 7K3000 and Deskstar 5K3000, while the other three have 1TB, 2TB and 3TB capacities.

The Hitachi XL Desk come with black enclosures, communicate with host PCs via the USB 2.0 connection and have prices of $99.99 (1TB), $169.99 (2TB) and $249.99 (3TB).

The Deskstar 5K3000 is composed of the same number of members with the same 1TB, 2TB and 3TB capacities.

They use the SATA 6.0 Gbps interface, have 32MB of buffer memory, a rotary speed of 5,400 RPM and the Coolspin technology.

Their prices have not been made clear, but they are already shipping, except for the 3TB one, which is slated for Q1, 2011.

The Deskstar 7K3000 line also has three members equipped with SATA 6.0 Gbps and a buffer of 64MB.

The 3TB Hitachi Deskstar Internal Hard Drive Kit model ships for $249.99, but not other prices are known.

“In a world of technology, there’s one common thread among all of us – storage. It’s ubiquitous, and is growing rapidly as we continue to purchase, create, download and save content daily,”said Mike Williams, vice president and general manager of Hitachi Branded Business.

“With our new 3TB solutions, we’re delivering huge capacity to a broad base of users to help them meet today’s—and tomorrow’s—data storage needs,” he added.

“Our 3TB offerings are a perfect addition to our family as it supports our strong following of channel partners, creative professionals and end users who require reliable, high-performance, high-capacity storage,” Williams concluded.
