Hilary Duff and former NFL star Mike Comrie were posing happily for pics on New Year’s Eve and posting the photos on social media but, as it turns out, things were far from rosy between them. Hours ago, a rep for Duff has announced their decision to separate.

Hilary and Mike were married for 3 years and have a son together. They say the decision did not involve a third party and certainly not lots of fighting behind closed doors, as they remain the best of friends.

“Hilary Duff and husband Mike Comrie have mutually decided to an amicable separation. They remain best friends and will continue to be in each other's lives. They are dedicated to loving and parenting their amazing son, and ask for privacy at this time,” the statement reads.

An insider confirms for People magazine that the split was amicable, while revealing that the two tried couples therapy for a while, in the hope that their marriage could still be saved.

In the end, they realized they were better off as friends, so they decided to separate before things took a turn for the worst. They will probably be filing for divorce soon.

“There was no major incident – no big event between the two of them. They really did drift apart. They have put effort and thought into this decision for a long time. They tried couples therapy, but in the end, they realized at this time, they work better as friends. And they really are great friends,” says the spy.

“[It was not] a rash decision. It's something [Hilary] thought through. She really does care about him and he really does care about her,” the insider continues.

Meanwhile, Hilary will be continuing to focus on reviving her music career. As her Twitter followers must know, she’s been posting photos of herself in the recording studio, boasting about getting back to work and promising new music soon.
