While reading just how violently Senator Hillary Clinton is fighting against the Grand Theft Auto franchise, I can't help thinking about games as Delta Force, where the level of violence is just as high, even if it takes place in an organized environment, the U.S. Army.
After all, is sex or violence the real reason why politics has decided to get involved in the game developers' internal affairs? Senator Hillay Clinton is denouncing the pornographic content and the violence, but she is especially concerned about the first
component. The only thing that we can understand from here is that the games where a well organized army completely destroys entire areas of the world's map are absolutely OK.
On the other hand, what I really can't understand is just how a game that is so pornographic and violent has nevertheless sold 6 million copies (we're talking about the sales figures for Grand Theft Auto Vice City) and how can Grand Thef Auto San Andreas be the most requested title for PS2. The only "logical" explanation would be that 6 million inhabitants of this planet have gone crazy and the only one who can save them is Senator Hillary Clinton.
Senator Clinton said in her speech that 50% of the kids aged between 7 and 14 have access to the M rated games. This means that the whole industry has a problem, because Rockstar Games can't be blamed for the unrestricted access of children to certain games.
After all, only 50% of a game's success depends on its content, the rest resulting from the performances of the distribution network and from the advertising campaign.
No one denies that Senator Hillary Clinton might be right to some extent, but we shouldn't turn Rockstar Games into a scapegoat for all the problems generated by the pornographic and violent content the children are exposed to, because this is not the best point to start solving this difficult problem.
