Yesterday, Hillary Clinton announced that, together with 16 NGOs and African nations, the Clinton Global Initiative would help protect the world's remaining elephant population by launching a three-year anti-poaching initiative.

By the looks of it, the initiative has an initial budget of $80 million (€59.2 million). Conservationists hope that, throughout the following three years, more funds will become available.

According to the Wildlife Conservation Society, some of this money will serve to hire an additional 3,100 park guards whose job will be to protect elephants in 50 regions that are usually targeted by poachers.

Besides, the people behind the initiative say that more time and money will go into locating poachers and bringing them to justice.

Traffickers will also be targeted as part of this initiative, and high officials in Africa have promised to push for an international ban on the sale, import and export of ivory products.

Lastly, this anti-poaching initiative will focus on curbing demand for ivory products.
