Hilary Duff has, until the age of 19, learned one or two things about stalkers: not once was she in a situation in which her life was in danger. To her credit, each time she handled herself with calm and took the necessary measures to never let the same incident happen again. This is also exactly what happened yesterday, as the young singer and actress was a guest in Toronto at MuchMusic to talk about her latest album, 'Dignity'.
Police officers say that, after Hilary's arrival at the studio, near an open platform on which Duff would step only minutes later to talk to fans and sign autographs, a crazed man began to verbally threaten her, vowing to end her life the moment he gets his hands on her. The other onlookers and fans who waited outside the studio, waiting for the songstress to finish shooting the live show, overheard him and alerted the police.
All this while, eyewitnesses claim, the man kept on hurling threats towards Hilary. However, at one point, the noisemaker made one swift move, as if to jump and attack her (and thus carry to term his plan of killing her). The police officers on the premises quickly jumped and restrained him and, other witnesses say, it did take a lot of force to calm the potential assailant down.
'The cops slammed his face into the pavement. He was bleeding', one photographer told the media. However, despite pictures that show him in cuffs, a police spokesperson said that no arrest has been made yet and no charges filed. Minutes after the incident, Hilary finished shooting for MuchMusic and stepped out on the platform to talk to her fans and sign autographs for them.
As I was saying, this is not the first time that Duff is put in such a situation: in November 2006, she asked for a restraining order against a Russian 18-year-old boy and his 50-year-old roommate, both of whom repeatedly threatened to kill her then boyfriend, Joel Madden from the Good Charlotte band. The Russian boy was finally sentenced to 117 days in jail and five years on probation on various counts, among which making terrorist threats and stalking were also included.
