But you'll be excused for thinking it's some other creature

Something that always happens when a new design method emerges is that amateur inventors will turn it into an open floodgate for their imagination.

Such is the case with the people behind Bold Machines: Bre Pettis, Robert Steiner, Aljosa Kemperle and Elizabeth Randel.

Bold Machines has been testing some of the more unusual designs out there. And while they don't actually expect to be able to produce technologies capable of combating aliens and whatnot, make-believe is an entirely different matter.

Besides, kids can think up the craziest things, and despite the irresponsibility and negligence inherent in young boys and girls, children often find it more exciting to watch someone or something else do something dangerous. At least before they get the idea to do it themselves.

Long story short, they might love the idea of a dog wearing a rocket jet pack. Bold Machines has published the design plans for 3D printing that very thing.

They call it Eddie. I'd be making a joke about the generic name and a certain three-boy cartoon group if I weren't busy marveling at how much the dog resembles a rodent. At least the tongue is depicted properly.

Unfortunately, Eddie's rocket backpack doesn't actually work. Still, that will only serve to make kids exercise their imagination.
