Hike Messenger developers can be proud of their achievement, as the instant messaging service has just passed the 20 million active users milestone.

Initially launched in India in December 2012 as an alternative to WhatsApp and other messaging services, Hike is offered for free and doesn’t require any monthly or yearly fee.

According to the developers, Hike has managed to increase its number of active users from 5 million to no less than 15 million in just 9 months.

However, over the last three months, things have been even more glorious for the Indian business, as Hike has added another 5 million active users to reach an impressive 20 million customers in almost 1 year and a half.

Not just to celebrate the impressive achievement, but also to show its love to customers, Hike has announced that it has improved the application with a new feature called “Hidden Mode.”

The new Hidden Mode is aimed at those users who want the outmost privacy for their chats. Users will now be able to hide their private chats and lock them under password.

With Hidden Mode, Hike Messenger users will now be able to keep their chats private from prying eyes, which is one of the most required security features by today’s users.

But this is not all. With the latest update, the developers have also added a new ability called “Big File Transfer,” which allows Hike Messenger users to share all file formats, including Docs, PPTs, PDFs and MP3s, of up to 100MB each.

This exceeds the capabilities of any other instant messaging application available on the market. Thanks to the new feature, Hike Messenger users will no longer have to share files via email or transfer over SD Cards if they don’t want to.

Here is what Kavin Bharti Mittal, head, Ppoduct and strategy, Hike Messenger, had to say about the achievement: “India has almost a 100M active mobile internet users in the country and that number is growing rapidly every year. That’s the market, which we’re building for.

The rate at which hike messenger has grown in the last 18 months is phenomenal and is a strong testament of the right direction in which the product is steering. We will continue to focus heavily on introducing new and innovative features to bridge the existing gaps in the IM market in India.”

Hike Messenger is present on all mobile platforms, including Android, BlackBerry, S40, Symbian S60, Windows Phone and Nokia X. You may want to give it a try, as the application is free and you won’t need to pay any fees in the future.
