"Blu-ray is fast-becoming the standard for quality movie playback, and we're taking that to the next level with the addition of BD writing capabilities," Christine Hsing, marketing manager at Plextor, said. "Plextor has always been a leader in the optical market and we're proud to offer our users a simple, all-in-one Blu-ray solution."

The Blu-ray technology has as a main focus the accurate and smooth playback of HD audio and video files. Although most Blu-ray drives do not have as a main goal the highest possible writing speed, staying at a reasonable 8x, Plextor put into the PX-B940SA unit the best features attainable by such a unit. Therefore, with its SATA interface and 4 MB of buffer memory, the burner is capable of an impressive 12x scribe speed, currently the highest attainable by such devices.

In addition to the high scribe speed that provides excellent storage possibilities by using Blu-ray disks, the highest quality rendering of movies and music files is ensured by CyberLink’s BD Suite software package, including the TrueTheater™ HD technology. Able to eliminate jagged edges and other unsightly side-effects of playing media files at a higher-than-intended resolution, this software is actually capable of turning normal content into HD images.

This includes the possibility of increasing the 480p resolution to 1,080p without any immediately perceivable quality loss. Thus, even normal media files can be fully enjoyed on an HD Home-Theater multiple display.

Naturally, the drive is backwards compatible with other types of optical disks, with write speeds of 12x BD-R DL/SL, 2x BD-RE, 16x DVD+R/-R, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW, 8x DVD+/-R DL, 5x DVD-RAM, 40x CD-R and 24x CD-RW. Supported disk sizes are both 12cm and 8cm.

The internal 12x BD writer PX-B940SA is now on sale at prices bordering $280.
