The launch of the PEN E-PL7 mirrorless camera has been delayed

A few days ago we told you that the Olympus E-M1 camera would apparently be getting the 4K treatment via a so-called massive firmware update scheduled to arrive in September.

If you’re a 4K enthusiast and an Olympus fan, you’ll be happy to know that, according to the rumor mill, the company is preparing a high-end OM-D series mirrorless camera, which is expected to see the light of day sometime around September 2014, probably at Photokina 2014.

Olympus’ mirrorless business appears to be doing quite well, even though the company hasn’t launched anything new on the market recently. There has been talk about PEN E-PL7 camera, but the device was delayed for unknown reasons.

Not so long ago, a source familiar with the matter claimed that the Olympus had an OM-D Micro Four Thirds camera in the pipeline. But since the OM-D E-M1 is getting a firmware update soon and the E-M10 low-end model was launched not so long ago, folks have assumed that an OM-D E-M5 successor was coming.

The latest info from 43Rumors seemed to indicate that the high-end Olympus OM-D might come with 4K video recording capabilities and will get announced at Photokina 2014.

As we have already mentioned, it would be quite bizarre for Olympus to replace the E-M1, especially since the 4K update is coming. On the other hand, an E-M5 successor might co-exist with the E-M1 in order to better compete with offerings such as the Panasonic GH4 and Sony A7S 4K cameras.

Update: Sadly, it appears that our hopes of seeing a new high-end OM-D camera have already been crushed. Sources have contacted 43Rumors saying that the camera we have been talking about is neither the E-M1 replacement nor the E-M5. It’s not a completely new OMD model either.

As we told you yesterday, Olympus is expected to pull the veil off a Silver E-M1 with 4K model at Photokina 2014, and according to the sources in the known, this is the product we have been theorizing about.

Bottom line, there’s not going to be any new OMD camera. Confirmation or information of this fact is expected to come from the all-knowing sources.

Anyway, if all this twisting and trusting is too much for you and you want to get down to business, you should know you can pick up the E-M1 form retailers like Amazon. The soon-to-be-4K-ready camera can be purchased for $1,299 / €968.
