New renders by Martin Hajek show a potential new look for the iPhone

You can pick any one of the dozens of iPhone 6 rumors flying around today and there’s a good chance none will materialize. But that hasn’t stopped people like Martin Hajek from dreaming up concepts that put those rumors into perspective with nicely-crafted renders.

The latest batch of mockups from the Dutch designer depicts one of the latest rumors about the iPhone 6, namely that it will have a slightly curved, tapered glass overlay. Hajek took things even further, bending the underlying LCD too while he was at it.

The end result? A jaw-dropping phone that only Apple could achieve with its brilliant team of designers and manufacturing partners in the Far East. They could well put Hajek on Jony Ive’s team by now.

The rounded edges would flush with the chassis, like the aluminum back of the iPod touch. In fact, many believe the iPhone 6 will share a lot of design similarities with the portable player.

In accordance with a reported specs leak, Hajek did away with one of the grills in the connector bay, moving the headphone jack closer to the Lightning port. He also drew up a small opening for where the mic would be placed.

The right side of the imaginary phone is equipped with a relocated sleep-wake button, caused by the phone’s significant increase in size. According to some tech experts, relocating the button there is the sensible thing to do with a device that goes beyond the 4.5-inch mark (screen measured on the diagonal).

As much as we’d love to see this exact mockup become a reality, Apple is unlikely to employ a screen that actually bends around the edges of the phone (at least not for another couple of years).

However, if the curved/tapered screen thing does materialize, it might just be that novelty feature that the iPhone needs to spark new interest in the handset. As we noted in a free-thoughts piece a while ago, the device needs an all-new face, not just a new case.

Hajek’s high-resolution renders, originally shared by thetechstorm.com, appear to come with a QR code that sends you to the 3D file.

The iPhone 6 will be announced later this year, perhaps as early as June 2 at the Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco. However, most analysts think Apple will stick with tradition and announce the phone at a special event scheduled for fall.
