Canonical Design Team, through Calum Pringle, proudly presented last evening (February 20th) the results of the sound theme contest for the upcoming Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin) operating system.

In a survey, over 2,000 users were asked to listen to four user-created sound themes and vote the one they like, during a week.

The winner is the first sound, which you can listen below. Here's what users think about it: "It almost spells out U-bun-tu"; "It’s unique and modern, but has a feeling of community within it"; "Its pleasant that it reflects the working of OS, smoother more user friendly"; "An idea of a future, dynamism and creativity"; "It has a “rich” quality that has generally been part of the Ubuntu soundscape"; "It is unobtrusive and feels like it fits the old “humanity” as well as the new “light” theme"; "It’s distinctive, playful, lively and yet restrained, soothing and modest."

Next step for the Canonical Design team is to make the sound more human, less synthesised, increase the warmth of tone, lower the pitch and tighten the end note, before it lands in the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Precise Pangolin) release.
