The image on the phones' screens changes as the skirt moves

Nokia’s Lumia 1520, the largest high-end Windows Phone 8-based smartphone out there, is a good-looking device, that’s for sure; yet, it seems that things can actually get better when a fashion designer enters stage.

This was the case when Nokia partnered with designers and Fashion Fringe winners, Fyodor Golan, for the creation of the first skirt in the world to be made out of Nokia Lumia devices.

They put together no less than 35 smartphones and came up with the piece that can be seen in the photos attached to this post. Moreover, Nokia announced that the skirt would be showcased at the London Fashion Week 2014.

What’s more interesting about the skirt, however, is not the fact that it was created putting together 35 units of Nokia’s 6-inch behemoth, but that each of them is turned on, and that the images on their screens change as the model wearing the skirt moves.

“As the skirt moves, images on the screens change colour, creating a synchronised shimmering effect that emulates real-world fabric,” a post on Nokia Conversations explains.

“To form this illusion, a bespoke app was conceived that employs GPS technology to align the wearer’s movements with the skirt’s sparkle.”

Additionally, the blog post explains that a camera in the model’s cap will allow for the mosaic-style imagery to change from showing the Fyodor Golan AW Collection to displaying the model’s surroundings.

KIN helped with the project, and explains that the result is “a wearable and experimental piece of technology.” They also explain that this was their very first project of the kind, despite having experience with tiled video walls, mobile apps development, and special camera apps.

“We’ve worked with Nokia on imaging projects in the past and we’ve always been impressed with the engineering know-how that’s gone into the development of the camera technology – from PureView software to Carl Zeiss lenses,” KIN said.

“All my life I’ve had Nokia phones and I love them for being easy! They have a great design aesthetic. This A/W 14 season we toyed with tradition against technology. We believe that you can create almost anything that isn’t influenced by gravity,” Fyodor commented.
