14 DAY TRIAL // By now, most UK Internet users, or at the very least the "pirates," have found that the proxy sites that they used to rely on to reach their favorite BitTorrent or video streaming sites are no longer working.
It started last week with Sky, then users started reporting that BT Broadband had started blocking proxies as well. It's now been confirmed that all the other major ISPs have followed suit, to no one's surprise.
What is surprising is that all this was done quietly. In fact, the ISPs aren't even saying who are they blocking.
Of course, that may have to do with the fact that they aren't even sure. It seems that, at this point, the entertainment industry, with a court order to back it, and the ISPs, have gotten quite comfortable censoring any site they see fit with little oversight.
It does seem like there is an automated process, and the anti-piracy groups just provide the domains and the ISPs automatically block them.
In any case, neither the ISPs nor the anti-piracy groups are too keen on telling anyone just what sites they've blocked.
The public should have a right to be informed even if, apparently, it doesn't have the right to fight the censorship. But this is what happens when you hand over so much power to a company or interest group with no oversight.
Still, it's not that hard to figure out what sites have been blocked since, obviously, they won't work inside the UK anymore.
TorrentFreak has compiled a list of proxy sites that are no longer accessible from the UK. All of them have a link to the four BitTorrent sites blocked by court orders there, namely The Pirate Bay, KickassTorrents (Kat.ph), H33T and Fenopy.
Here's a list of known blocked proxies, but there may be more.
