Fans will have to wait until this fall to get a first proper look at Marvel’s new female Thor in action (because we’ve already seen drawings of her), but today we’re getting a hint of what the male Thor, the one unworthy to wield the Mjölnir anymore, will look like.

This fall, the new series of Thor, the comic book from Marvel, will introduce a female Thor because, as editor Wil Moss put it, “The inscription on Thor's hammer reads ‘Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.’ Well it's time to update that inscription.”

Written by Jason Aaron, the new series will include illustrations by Russell Dauterman, who just posted the photo above on his Tumblr: that’s the Thor that, for whatever reason, is no longer able to wield the hammer. Click on the image to see it in full.

“Did these as I was starting work on the book. The costumes were designed before I came on board (by the great Esad Ribic, I believe), but here’s my take on them,” Dauterman writes.

Turning Thor from male to female is just one of the many changes Marvel has prepared for fans come autumn: Steve Rogers will no longer be Captain America and will be replaced by Sam Wilson, and Iron Man is getting a brand new suit and a much darker side.

However, no other announcement has displeased fans as much as the Thor one did, because they are convinced Marvel will make a mess of things and ruin such a beloved character.
