In their ongoing patent dispute over the similarities shared by their smartphones and tablet computers, Apple and Samsung have been forced to release technical details and imagery pertaining to their early prototypes.

Pictured above is one such prototype that never got much attention in the media. Even without the fruity logo on the back, if you’d have to guess the manufacturer you’d probably take less than a second to declare this an Apple design.

The image was highlighted in a recent story ran by Ars Technica featuring a rare prototype of the original iPhone dating back from 2005.

The two-inch-thick prototype discussed earlier today had almost nothing in common with the end-version of the product. However, the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 5 bear an uncanny resemblance to the prototype hardware pictured above.

Granted, this cut-off-corner design is something only Star Trek fans probably still appreciate today.
