“The Interview” drops 2 places, “Gone Girl” goes up one

Buzz around Sony Pictures’ “The Interview” is beginning to die down, after the hacking scandal and the simultaneous release on several online platforms, although the initial decision was to cancel all plans to put it out. TorrentFreak reports that, for the first week of the new year, it is no longer the most pirated movie online.

“Gone Girl” is. Directed by David Fincher and starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike, and based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Gillian Flynn, “Gone Girl” is considered one of the best movies of 2014 – offering, at the same time, a sharp and unflinching look at the sex wars and gender politics.

“Gone Girl” also manages to do the impossible with certain segments of the audience, i.e. make Ben Affleck likeable again. And it couldn’t come with better timing, seeing how he was trashed online when he was announced as the next Batman, in Zack Snyder’s upcoming “Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice.”

The rest

The animation “Penguins of Madagascar” is at number 2 this week, in the top 10 of most pirated movies. Benedict Cumberbatch voices Classified, and if you’re a fan of his work, you probably appreciated the irony in the fact that he stars in such a movie when he’s clearly unable to pronounce “penguins,” which on his lips sounds either like “penglings” or “penwings.”

The YouTube video below is confirmation of that, in case you’re having trouble believing us.

“The Interview” is down from number 1 to number 3, followed by James Gandolfini’s last movie, the thriller “The Drop.” It also stars Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace and is billed a near-perfect drama / thriller that boasts stellar performances from all 3 leads. Apparently, those in the habit of illegally downloading films online also think it’s pretty hot.

Liam Neeson’s most recent action movie, “A Walk Among the Tombstones,” sits at number 5, while “The Judge” with Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall occupies the 6th position. “The Judge” got some very solid buzz ahead of release, but it fizzled in theaters among a serious wave of negative reviews from the critics.

Obviously, that’s not stopping people from seeing it.

The comedy “Horrible Bosses 2” is at number 7, “PK” is at 8, while “Outcast 5.0” and “Dumb and Dumber To” round up the top 10.
