Heidi Montag Goes to Court to File Separation Papers

These past few days have been all about whether the split of Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt was the real thing or just another publicity stunt they’d come up with to generate more media for their projects. While signs would seem to point to the latter – people close to the two would also say the same – Heidi is determined to show the breakup is real, TMZ says.

Consequently, she’s filed the necessary papers to be legally separated from Spencer, which is the first step towards getting a divorce. The paparazzi agency and celebrity gossip website has even gotten a hold of the papers, and they cite irreconcilable differences as reason for the separation. Moreover, they’ve been filed in Heidi’s own handwriting, which could mean she’s doing this without a lawyer.

“MZ has learned Heidi Montag just showed up at the Santa Monica Courthouse and officially filed for legal separation from Spencer Pratt. She lists irreconcilable differences as the reason for separation. Heidi did not file divorce papers. The legal significance of legal separation is that her earnings will become her separate property from the date of separation. Heidi lists the date of separation as today, June 8,” TMZ writes. Of course, this too could be just another stunt to get more attention, word on the web says, one meant to show that the breakup is real, even though it isn’t.

“Interesting... under the section, ‘community assets and debts,’ Heidi wrote, ‘No such assets or debts.’ It’s unclear if Heidi and Spencer have a prenup which keeps their assets separate, or if they’re broke. Heidi tried filing in Malibu – of course – but the Malibu courts don’t do divorces. Heidi filed the legal docs in her own handwriting. There’s no evidence she has a lawyer,” TMZ further reports on the filing of the papers.

While all this is going on, Spencer remains unusually quiet on the subject. As we also reported on several past occasions, it was Heidi’s publicist who confirmed the separation for the media, Heidi who said in interviews she needed some time away from Spencer but that she would always love him, and Heidi who started work on a new reality show, one that, incidentally or not, focuses on her newly-single life.
