After years of harassment from the paparazzi in his homeland of Australia, Heath Ledger seems more determined than ever not to return (at least not for filming) to his native country.
The actor has a very tense relationship with the Australian press, especially the tabloids and the paparazzi and grew sick of the constant media attention he receives. Things have only reached the boiling point while filming for his latest work, Aussie indie movie Candy.
While on set, the paparazzi have permanently followed the team and tried to infiltrate the set.
Candy director Neil Armfield reveals that Ledger missed the premiere of the movie on purpose just for not giving the press satisfaction and extra opportunities to take photos.
Not so long ago, Heat Ledger's farewell to Sydney seemed rather permanent: he sold his apartment and moved to Los Angeles with his wife (Michelle Williams) and his baby daughter.
Armfield told moviehole.net, "He just felt that it was too soon to come back to Australia. It's very sad. A couple of paparazzi (here in Australia) have sort of realized that they can get a bit of a rise out of him. He's a boy… and they attacked him.
We were in the middle of the third take (during a scene), and this guy jumps out of the crowd--and he gets out his camera, and yells out, 'Flash!' It was the middle of the take, so therefore, he ruined the take… but then he adds, 'Gotcha, Ledger!' and he takes off up the street. „
